Dr. Smith
shows electrospun elastomeric polymer fibers and discusses how they
can be made into a structured hydrogel that forms the basis for advanced
wound dressings. When a patch made of layers of hydrogel, Vitamin
C and nitrites is applied to a wound, and water is added, the gel swells
to allow mixing of Vitamin C and nitrites producing nitric oxide, a powerful
wound-healing and antibacterial compound.
