Four Point Quarterly (1) - January 2021
Dear MSNO Community,
As with many professional societies, we are taking this time to regroup and determine how to best offer content for our members while we socially distance. This is the first issue of the Four Point Quarterly, our new newsletter. The format will be short and sweet, with four points to connect you to upcoming events, and engage us as a community. If you have content for the next FPQ, please send it to [email protected]
The first five individuals to respond to this post (or the email) will get their 2021 membership fees covered by a kind donation from JEOL. Simply reply to [email protected], and change the heading to “Waive my 2021 membership fee”.
We wish you and yours the best for 2021.
Warm regards, your MSNO Board

- MSNO is planning a spring event to network and regroup in mid-March. Details will be released in February. Please remember to renew your membership for 2021: go to the MSNO website, http://www.msneo.org, and select the “Membership and Dues” option in the left column.
- Covid-19 has made us reframe how to safely work in laboratories. Remote operation capabilities are more important than ever, allowing for research and training to continue safely. As in-person conferences and trade shows have been cancelled, many vendors have created remote demonstrations of measurements and equipment. This month’s featured vendor is JEOL USA. Their High Resolution SEMs provide the flexibility of remote observation and operation; https://bit.ly/2KwdPHs. The JEOL Tungsten and Field Emission SEMs also provide the capability of accommodating large irregular shaped heavy samples of twenty pounds or more. You can schedule a live demonstration with your samples at https://bit.ly/31CpBpH. For additional information please contact Bill Powell at JEOL USA Inc. (Email:[email protected]. Cell: 978-764-2397)
- Mark your calendar and Save the Date for the premier microscopy education and networking event of the year — Microscopy & Microanalysis 2021, August 1-5, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Plenary speakers this year include Covid-19 vaccine developers, and the 2020 Kavli Award winners. The deadline for paper submission to the Microscopy Society of America Annual Meeting is February 18, 2021, submission information here. **Travel awards are available for students, postdocs, and technologists**.
- The Case Western Reserve University Graduate Materials Society brightened up the winter with the EMSE Department Beautification Art Contest. With muses ranging from Andy Warhol to the Mario Brothers, an array of creative entries were submitted, and will be displayed when the renovated White Building reopens in 2021. A gallery of the entries is displayed here. Congratulations to Nishan Senanayake for his first place creation “Fatigue at Case”, which used neural style transfer to blend content and style images.
We wish you and yours the best for 2021.
Warm regards, your MSNO Board
